Review: Mantegna Tarot

As I get myself up and running again, I'll be starting a number of projects to serve my clients, friends and students. Card Reviews is one such project.

Tarot With Durriken is, of course, a blog devoted mostly to living and working with the Tarot Cards. However, there are a number of other subjects that we explore here as well. The Spiritual Process of the Tarot Cards leads its users toward many subjects, from magic and astrology, to science and psychology, all in the pursuit of living an enlightened and enchanting incarnation.

Today, we'll be discussing the Mantegna Tarot, a beautiful and non-traditional Tarot Deck by publisher Lo Scarabeo.

Like all of Lo Scarabeo's decks, these cards are breathtaking. Beautifully gilt in silver, the images are inspiring and enlightening. But, they're not a traditional deck of Tarot Cards. Instead of the two Arcana that we're used to seeing, this deck is divided into 5 groups of 10 cards each, which parallel the medieval world view.

The booklet that comes with this deck is useless in interpreting the Mantegna Tarot. Instead of explaining the meanings of the cards specific to this deck, it gives us interpretations for the standard 78 Card Tarot. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, in that it requires the user to do more than read a book. You can go on an expedition of research, studying the individual cards and their meanings to the medieval world, or you can trust your own intuition and run with what you believe the Universe is trying to tell you. Fortunately, an addition to the deck is another set of cards with 2 images per card that can assist you in your interpretations with specific key-words. I've included those keywords in the following list as a sort of quick cheat sheet.

I think I would describe this deck as very action oriented. It gives great advice, and may even be able to help an individual better understand the situation he or she is in. However, I believe that the greatest use of this deck is in its meditative qualities. Looking at the images, playing with the keywords in your mind can lead to inspirational understanding and guidance.
